It's the one time teens are distracted from their scheduled angst, and such a promised event can cause peace at even the most divided of schools while everybody plans for the most important THING E V E R. Getting excited only makes sense. There's the ubiquitous red plastic cups! Questionable fashion choices and haircuts! Playlists filled with early 2000s r&b and slow jams for nervous slow dances! You better get pumped for this shit, kid. Because that's what you are now, a high school kid, and you're going to the dance - willingly or unwillingly. Put on that button-up dragon shirt, make sure you bring your date flowers...or go stag, because you're a pathetic social reject or something! You do you, bro, and maybe you'll still get to second base.
